Mean, Median, and Mode of the Baseball Salary Data

In this activity, you will be calculating the mean, median, and mode of the salaries for the players on two different baseball teams, the Angels and the Orioles.


Using the data set in Excel,

Steps to Follow

A. Insert rows as needed, then calculate the mean, median, and mode for the Angels using the appropriate formulas. Use bold labels in the cells to the left of the formulas.

B. Insert rows as needed, then calculate the mean, median, and mode for the Orioles using the appropriate formulas. Use bold labels in the cells to the left of the formulas.

C. Copy the labels and statistics for the measures of central tendency for the Angels (not the actual data set) and paste that information into the upper left area of a new worksheet. Use the paste "values and source formatting" command. Be sure to add a label in the row above the data that indicates it is the "Angels Data".

D. Copy the same information for the Orioles and paste that into the same worksheet as in step C, beneath the Angels data. Use the same special paste command. Be sure to add a label that indicates it is the "Orioles Data."

Put the answers to the following questions in cells beneath the data.
1. Which team has the highest average salary?
2. What salary was earned most frequently by an Orioles player?

Now, return to your original worksheet. Suppose that the Angels traded for three superstars, each making over $3,000,000.00/yr. These superstars replace the players with the lowest salaries on the team.

E. Copy the measures of central tendency labels and data for the revised Angels data. Paste the labels and the new statistical values in the answer worksheet beneath the two questions above. Label this data as the "Revised Angels Data." Compare the new mean, median and mode with the original ones.

Type your answers to the questions below in cells beneath the information from step E.

3. Which statistic changed the most?
4. Which statistic changed the least?
5. What point is being made about the measures of central tendency with this exercise?

Use Ctrl+A to select all text, and change the font to TNR 12. Put a header in your worksheet that has your name on one line, then your period below it, in TNR 12 font, in the right-hand side.

Finally, print out this single page worksheet (the one with the headers and summary information, not the one with all the data), and turn it in prior to the due date.
