A stunning blend of wood, glass, and tile
This beautiful CVGS-themed cabinet is the product of the joint efforts of local woodworker Des Black and CVGS parent Janet Chalker. The barrel, soaked in the Kentucky tradition, was carefully disassembled, sanded, cleaned, and the cooper's bands painted before being fitted with a custom back panel and shelf. The tile-and-glass mosaic, which features the classic CVGS blocks logo, includes materials sourced from as far afield as the Netherlands.
Double doors made from the existing staves maintain the authentic look of the barrel, ensuring the final piece would be both fashionable and functional.
Dr. Smith worked with Mr. Black as he cut the doors and added the hinges, handles, and latch. The number of steps involved to transform a barrel into this beautiful cabinet was impressive!
Janet Chalker has been working with stained glass and mosaic work for more than 20 years.
When asked how many hours were required to complete the tiling, Janet's response was: “A lot…but counting hours takes away from the fun of creating.”
